Cab "Clearance" Lights

To those who have done this before... What is the first step that I need to take to install clearnace lights and what should be expecting in the install. Is there a write up on this anywhere? The beast is a 2005 2500 4dr Longbed. It came stock without clearance lights and I am looking into getting them. Thanks.

The first step would be figuring out where you want to put them. If you want to have them in stock locations then find someone who has them and make up a template for yourself of you could put them where you like since the 3rd gen trucks did not come with the guides on the inside of the roof like the 2nd gen trucks. There will be a plug behind the a-pillar to plug the harness into so that's covered. When you do put them on, I suggest being very generous with the silicon to make sure the lights do not leak

My Recons came with instructions on how to measure to put them in the stock location. Go to Office Max or something and get you one of those "Visa-A-Vis" markers. It's a wet erase marker. You can draw lines and stuff on the roof with it and wipe it off when you're done with a damp towel. They explained how and where to measure from and where to draw lines. If I recall, we used two people to stretch a piece of masking tape across with the edges where the lines go. Then just measure and mark off.

Set the lights where they belong without screwing them in and then step back and look and see if you want to move the lights around from what they say. I remember I moved mine a little bit to look a little more like I wanted. Then drill your holes. The first hole in your baby's roof is real nerve racking, but after that it was smooth sailing.

It wasn't hard at all. Just take your time and quadruple check all your measurements and placement before you drill. The hardest part was probably taking down the headliner. We could have easily done it in an hr and a half to 2 hrs but we took our time and BSed a lot. It took us about 4 but we took our time and had fun doin it. Good luck!

I forgot to add, on the harness that goes through the roof and plugs in, we shaved down the little plastic lip on it so we didn't have to drill as big of a hole. Use a LOT of sealant and you won't have a problem.

Do any of you have pics? Do the stock cab lights light up only in the front or the whole shell lights up (front and back... for instant your behind a truck with cab lights going up a hill... can you see the cab lights from behind?)

I'm pretty sure the stock lights are lit all the way around, while the Recon LEDs I have mostly face forward.

Here ya go. The light being visible all around wasn't really needed for me since I have the valance lights, running lights, and now lights on the toolbox.

Go to your local dealership and ask them for the kit. I paid i think around $90.00 for mine but it came with a template and everything I needed. The template is drawn out so it looks like they came on the truck from the factory. The first hole like the other poster said is nerve racking but after that it's no biggy. It took us 4 hours but we could have been done in an hour or so but we took our time and the headliner was time consuming like the previous post said. Good Luck!!
