Lotta garbage on there you wouldn't want the wife and kids to hear. At times you can meet some decent nice people on there and it can be uselful for traffic reports on accidents and cops but honestly I have to say for the most part I keep mine turned OFF.
It has saved me more than one ticket on the interstate. I usually have it off when I am not on the interstate or if the family is with me.

Get one with the weather bands built in, like the Cobra 29 WX NW ST.
CBs are handy for info on the interstate, or for local directions in a town you don't know. They certainly have their uses, and they are handy. That said, mine is usually off since there is a lot of crap on there I'd rather not listen to much of the time. Good with the bad, you know.
If you are looking for long range radio communications without the riff raff, consider an amateur radio license (HAM). That's what I do, and there are advantages there as well.

We use em a lot with the cotton harvest - have them in the pickups for the bosses and then in the pickers and the boll buggies so everyone's on the same page. They definitely have their advantages. You just have to have someone to talk to. If you live fairly isolated.... well it won't be much use.

My CB sure saves my bacon a on regular basis. Today for example, someone lost a 6" X 4 ft pulp wood log in my lane on I-65 about 100 yds ahead of me at 75 mph. CB heads up gave me the chance to slow down & dodge the victims. I feel naked without it & my radar/laser detector.
