Preventative Mods..

I read a lot on this forum about guys who are replacing fuel rails, injectors, u-joints, on their 3rd "this", "10th that."

Assuming a reasonably stock truck, maybe intake/exhaust; what are the best mods someone can make to their cummins to prevent the 5.9's most notorious problems? IE: 48RE Rebuild, Aftermarket fuel rails/injectors, etc.... Trying to avoid unnecessary bills for people who will get by the dealer over something that could have been prevented.

Im a fan of a better fuel filter. A Cat 2micron filter on a base works. Glacier diesel makes a kit or you can build one for 1/2 the price.

Bypass oil filtration. The first mod I made was the BMK-11.

Just started looking at this thing from your post and WOW! do they really work?? i noticed they don't really sell kits but you kinda have to piece it together. Definitely interested in hearing a bit more about the kits.. Easy to install or total pain?? One for each, engine and trans?

They sell kits...just do your research. Im not going to run one personally. I have read a couple threads here about people having back luck with them. The dual filter amsoil in particular.

One of the plus items on a bypass is that you can leave the bypass filter on for more than 1 use, I am onmy 4th rotation for the bp100 I have,my UOA's and particle counts are still great. The downside is that there is a extra filter to purchase, have on hand and it can be quite expensive. Allbypass filters do the same thing in principle, each variable has a slighlty differant twist though

Frantz and Motorguard - Use tp and are good for about 3k miles before changing
FS2500 - uses a filter media that is in and and out like tp with mileage at about 5k changes

Amsoil, Baldwin bypass systems use spin on style filters with use of more than one oil change (I use my Amsoil for 30K miles and my Baldwin for 15K) the differance is <$8 for a Baldwin and >$30 for a Amsoil filter (I have done particle counts on both and they are very similar, just looking out for the budget minded)

It all boils down to how elaborate, how expensive and how often you like being under the hood of your vehicle...there are plenty of diesel motors with routine maintenance that go 500k miles....so make a choice that fits what you want and only listen to about 1/2 of what everyone (including myself) says onthese subjects.

Oil bypass

I just got my AMSOIL bypass today and cant wait to install it. from what I read its a good MOD for the motor. I also replaced the rear DIF cover and TRANS pan for added fluid and running temps.

The new model number for the BMK-11 is now BMK-21 single remote bypass. The kit will include the mount (not the mounting bracket) the oil line, and fittings. You will need to puchase the oil fill cap return seperately, along with a 90* JIC fitting.

I, with the help of a friend, made the mounting bracket from 3/16" stock steel. He had some extra laying around the barn. The piece is 12" long with a 90* bend at 5"(horizontal plane), and 3" wide (roughly). I mounted it on the engine. Amsoil does not recommend this location, however this is the standard location for the FS2500. I have had zero issues with it.

Baldwin fuel filters
Amsoil full syn oil
Amsoil EAO 80 oil filter
Amsoil nano fiber air filter
Opti-lube or 2 stroke

Leave everything basically stock, change fluids/filtes often, such as every 10k for fuel, 10-20k for oil/filter and you should be fine. If you want to spend allitle more on preventitive mods get an air dog.

Where did you purchase your covers from? I have been thinking of doing this to mine as well...but I have a 6-spd tranny...so not sure what options I have available! Thanks
