I am new on here i have an 07 2500 bighorn, all stock. What is the bypass system, is it replacing the regular oil filter, is there any benefit other than just better filtration?

Air Dog

I am new here. I have a 2007 5.9l bighorn edition 4wd with 6spd manual transmissions. I sam thinking about adding a smarty chip, for mileage and power 2nd. I just read about the air dog and was wondering if it was worth the 500, and would it be the original air dog or air dog II? And what about putting a hole in the bottom of my stock air box with a hose going to the bumper. I appreciate any advice. Anyone have any trouble with the manual transmission?

I installed the Amsoil BMK-11 bypass oil filtration at my first 2K mile oil change - controls the wear particles that are less size than stock stratapore oil filter catches. The stratapore is a 15 micron filter, the Amsoil is a 2 micron filter.

I use the Baldwin 5 micron fuel filter in the stock canister, and have the GDP bypass fuel filter in-line to the CP3. I installed it at around 5K miles.

I have front and rear MagHytek differential covers - the covers are finned for additional cooling and also add more oil capacity - I run the Amsoil Severe Gear 75w-110 syn fluid in my diffs.

I added the Fast Coolers to my 6-speed tranny - again finned for better cooling - additional oil capacity. I run the Amsoil ATF in my tranny and xfer case.

My intake mods - Ice Box Intake, Amsoil nano filter, Amsoil pre-filter - Cool Blue Hose, GDP intake Horn, and the BD steel pipe replacing the plastic pipe from the intake horn to the intercooler - gets the intake air flowing more freely.

My exhaust mods - The Fab Shop Header, ME pipe - gets the outflow moving better.

My cooling system mod was the addition of the Opie bypass.

So, I'm filtering my fuel better, filtering my oil better, have my intake and exhaust moving air better. Cooling my axles/diffs and tranny better and the additional fluid aids the process. Aiding my cooling system in relief of the heat issues in the #5 and #6 cylinders.

I do oil analysis at every oil change, my reports come back with perfect results each time. Virtually no wear takng place, no fuel in the oil. My overall fuel economy has improved seadily with each thing I added along the way. I am averaging 20mpg's as a constant driving at 7k ft elevation up/down mountains. I use the XPD as my fuel additive.

Outside of regular maintenance, just driving and enjoying not wrenching. I have had no problems with my truck. I tow heavy, loads of 18-24K on a regular basis up/down 6% grades all the time. My EGT's are running in a good range less than 1300*s, average of 1225/1250* when going up those grades. When running empty, my EGT's are now running a good 300*s lower that when the truck was new and stock.

My suspension mods include the KORE Leveling Kit and also rear Bilstein shocks, Firestone Ride Rite Air bags, Helwig Rear Sway Bar, and the Defiant Steering box stabalizer. I added new energy suspension bushings to the front stabalizer that are greasable.

I have kept up with what has been noted as things relative to early failures or much needed preventative mods from day one. My truck just seems to get better and better with everything that I have done. The mods are excellent insurance-like investments.

Whew! thats a mouthful... how much did all that run you? pretty easy stuff to do or would i need to take it to a good diesel shop. I like the sound of no fuel in oil and 20mpg!

Yeah, it IS a mouthful. I did all the installs myself. All are actually easy to do. Just about time and money, and they were done over the 3-1/2 years since I bought my truck new.

I just recently installed the Fab Shop Header and the Opie Bypass. Have $625 in the header and $400 in the Opie. I suppose the header took me about 4/5 hours to install it, and the Opie was about an hour. The first thing I noticed after installing the header was cooler idling temps, faster spool-up, and cooler running temps. It is really well made, the exhause flow is much better over stock, even though it still outputs to/through the turbo which is almost like what you could call a restriction in flow in some ways, but better spooling also probably contributes to needing a little less skinny pedal to achieve the same results in speed. I have yet to run a full tank of fuel since the header install, but let me say that with the mileage I have put on so far, I am using less fuel to go the same distances, my fuel gauge is not dropping as fast.

The Amsoil Bypass was around $250, couple hours or a little less to install.

The GDP fuel filter and the big line kit were right around $250, couple hours, maybe a little more to install.

The MagHyteks were a little over $500 for the pair, install time is really not relevant, you have to pull the stock covers to change the oil, now just a drain plug.

The Fast Coolers were about $125 for the pair, did them when I changed fluids as well, maybe about an hour to install them.

Ice Box - $300, Blue Hose - $100, GDP Intake Horn - $275, BD pipe - $100, and the ME was a birthday presant from a good friend-I think they are about $100. About 3/3-1/2 hours to intall everything.

The KORE Leveling Kit was about $400, and the rear Bilsteins were right around $175. I probably had 4 hours into install this stuff.

The Firestone Air bags were right around $250 and an hour to install. About the same for the Helwig sway bar money and time was similar. The steering stabalizer bushings and the steering stabalizer, plus I also added the MaxxLinks at the same time was a couple hours install too. Total for all of them probably right at $200.

Stuff adds up over time. not that hard on the wallet when you do them here and there. But when you look at what it costs to replace the things that most all of this protects or helps, it is probably only about 10-15% of the price of what could actually be damaged without this stuff. And you could still have some things fail and be costly repairs. I looked at all this from the viewpoint that the added possible longevity had a greater value over what I bought or would have to repair.

Next on my list is the stock injectors. I will probably only go up a notch, maybe 50hp?? So, time to start researching this stuff. I think many who had injector issues, kept going to the dealer, get on replaced at a time, etc would have possibly solved their issues before a meltdown had they gone up some in the injector capabilities. That 3rd injector stuff, timing stuff, all of it appears to be more the culpret to problems that get WAY TOO expensive over what it might take to have a better pre-remedy. I think the Smarty Jr runs some better timing events over the stock programming, which I really believe that the stock programming underlies all those injector issues people have had.

I have stayed away from major engine mods because of the 100K warranty on the engine, but once that warranty period is over, I am going to then do the injectors and also a cam. Until then, the Smarty Jr will be what changes the timing events to save my injectors.

What is the ME you installed? I am new don't know what that is. I just purchased a kore recon suspension and was looking to put some engine mod on. Any suggestions what the best first mod would be? i am assuming a smarty chip. Any body use or know anything about air dog?

ME - muffler elimination pipe. I kept the cat, the cat backpressure is just a couple pounds, nothing like the muffler backpressure, and my truck is still EPA legal, that's just TOO big of an issue and the fines are off the charts. The ME pipe is the same one that Genos sells. IT was real easy to remove the muffler and install the elimination pipe.

CD can you tell me more about the upgrade you made to you coolant. And after you installed your by-pass did you get any funny smells like a burnt plastic or oil smell toward the front of the motor. I have a burning smell like that and can only find some smoke coming from the crank case tube. which I have been told is normal.

Honestly, I am now VERY interested in these bypass systems. I was jus ton AMSOIL's website... How do you know which system to get? Do i need one with a free-flow filter attached or should i buy the single remote unit and throw an Amsoil filter on my existing free flow filter location?

As far as fuel delivery/filtration, I'm looking at the AirDog 100/150. I have an edge juice with attitude, intake, and exhaust and don't plan on getting much crazier with it. Will the 100 be sufficient? Are injectors required? My truck is stock aside from the aforementioned mods and after reading all the posts on this damn forum, I'm 99.9% sure my cummins is going to explode due to injector failure at 100,001 miles and am trying to do everything to prevent this!

Do the high flow injector nozzles help prevent injector failure when paired with a better filtration system and lift pump like the air dogs? I'm ready to get this stuff once my questions are answered, I just want to make sure i do this right the first time! Thanks in advance for the input guys!

BTW "CD in NM", your truck inspires me. If you have a breakdown of all the Part numbers of the bypass systems on your truck, I would definitely appreciate the help. I'm heading in the right direction, just need a bit more guidance!

Oh and I have a K&N intake and would like to get an AMSOIL dry filter for it, anyone have a Part Number??

I was told the BMK-21 single by pass is the best for our trucks. Any thing more it's over kill, and a new filter goes on the factory one. Make sure you get the cummings fittings it makes the installation way batter looking. I had a good time installing it and if you need pics or pointer let me know.
