Tie rod upgrade for 03'-08' trucks

My dads truck steering SUCKED. So he went and bought the tie-rod assembly and I installed it. Damn its nice working on newer trucks, only took an hour or two.

Here's some pictures to show the difference and how beefier the new system is, and not only is the systen beefy, it take the Y style assembly and replaces it with a true T style. When I get the $$$ I am planning on doing the same swap.

Its almost twice the size of the old system, and the steering is MUCH better. Still a little play, but not like before. To do this you need:

'09 truck upgraded steering drag/link and tie rod - Model Number - 1-52122362AE
5/8" 1/2" drive socket (steering stabilizer)
3/4" open end wrench (steering stabillizer)
7/8" 1/2" drive socket (for tie rod nuts)
1/2" drive socket wrench
And having a tie-rod/ball joint seperator kit helps a lot, you can rent one from Checkers (kit no. 56 from there). And of course a decent sledge hammer.

NOTE: The orginal steering stabilizer WILL WORK on this system, there is NO NEED to order a new one, unless your's is shot. And no matter how close you get it to the original aligned position, go to a shop and have it done again when you do anything regarding your steering/suspension.

Hope this helps anyone doing the swap, it's well worth the money. Total cost including tax was $322.00.

Sweet man, nice write up and your timing couldn't be better as I'm about to start replacing steering parts. I'll be looking for the model number...

Thanks again.ROB

I like that kit but it requires you drill out the knuckles which we weren't willing to do.

Got the model # now.

No problemo! It will be a bit better with this kit. The truck is not aligned yet so I don't know the full difference, but even with it not aligned I can tell its a lot better. The old steering system went to mexico though... and got stuck in salt mud, which is why it was probably loose.

Glad to help out man.

Hey guys, im gonna do this swap this weekend. first dealer i called gave me the 52122362ae number for $350. then i asked another dealer and he told me i needed the 52122362ae and the 52122370ab. said hed give me the linkage for 241.45 and the damper for 109.09. said the damper was a must. i also read on another post that i would need a new pittman arm. my question is... do i need the damper from dodge? i could probably find a cheaper one or a better one for the same kind of money. and, do i need to go ahead and get the pitman arm?
Thanks guys!

Russell....don't know which dealer you are talking to, but moparonlineparts.com has 52122362ae for $212.28. If your dealer is local, printout the prices you get on the web site I listed and show it to the parts guy. You do need a damper for an 09 Ram (don't know if there are any aftermarket dampers for an 09 out already, maybe only factory at this time) and the pitman arm for an 09.

.....unfortunately "no" for both of those parts. While you can get "away" with the 06 pitman arm, you run the risk of having the pitman arm hit the new linkage if you hit a large bump and cycle the front suspension through its maximum travel.

anyone following this, i just wanted to make a note. you dont have to buy the $110 damper from the dealer. they are correct the old one wont work but i bought a monroe for $35 that is the same as the new one they are trying to sell as a companion to these kits. just wanted to throw that out there for anyone trying to get the swap done. also you should probably buy the new pitman arm. they give the new set up a better fit.

the new setup(1-52122362AE) in the 1st post is pretty much the same as the old. still y axis setup. just might be bigger in diameter. look at how thuren's setup is. tie rod goes from pitman arm to right wheel and uses the same nut and bolt to connect lower tie rod to left wheel.

where as the setup(1-52122362AE) in the 1st post shows a y axis setup similar to old setup. infact its the same setup just larger diameter on tie rods.

sorry but thats not what you want. and on top of that im pretty sure the newer set up is not re greasable......
