I took mine off over two years ago. It got cut and pulled loose so I just took it off and threw it away. I doubt the hood is going to get that much hotter without it. Driving the air flow will cool it. Sun will make it hotter, at least in south Texas. I have yet to find it shown in a Service Manual. It might be there, but I looked and did not find any reference to it.
I don't think the 03 and early 04s had one to start with. 3rd gens from 04.5 and up is where I see them. I suspect it was as much noise suppressor as heat shield. And if it is a heat shield I would rather the heat get transfered out and not kept in the engine compartment.

This is what I was worried about, getting to hot for the paint
Well my hood inside paint has not discolored and the engine has been pretty hot a number of times both Engine temp and EGTs. You have to realize there is a plastic underhood lamp under there. If that plastic doesn't discolor from the heat right above the exhaust manifold and turbo then the paint on the hood should not.
