I'm going to be needing tires in the next few weeks and debating on if I should get a highway tire.
For my personal use I don't go off road often and when I do I can wait until it's not muddy. I don't tow often and when I do it's not more than 7000 lbs. We do get snow here that at times can be bad. Doing well in the dry, rain and snow is more important.
For my work is another matter. I'm a land surveyor and I'm provided with a truck but it's often two wheel drive. I will at times use my own truck and this is where a mud tire would be nice. I've been begging for a four wheel drive and or a four wheeler for years so I don't really feel obligated to buy tires for my jobs best use.
I'm not sure if I should stick with an all terrain or not? I have Goodyear silent armors now. What are the advantages of a highway tire and tread? Any advice is appreciated.
I'm an AT user for over 8 years now on 2 trucks. They far outshine a highway tire in snow and mud. Rain doesn't ever seem to be a problem for them either. More typical all seasons will wear longer but give up the winter grip a lot. Rain I have no idea.
Since you're maybe 300 miles? further south maybe you can get away with an All season. I prefer to not be afraid to travel due to weather. Makes my life a lot easier not worrying about it.
i would go with an AT, most dont have much noise while driving and if you need to go off road they would be much better than a HT. as far a wear they may wear a bit faster but the ability to have good traction in all conditions is definitely worth it in my opinion
A good A/T tire with the snowflake (rated as a winter traction device) is a good compromise for decent overall handling in pretty much any condition. They are not perfect by any sense of the imagination but they do the job when they need to so you can either get out of a pickle or navigate through one.
Highway tires do their best on flat, relatively dry roads hauling either the truck or the truck and a load. They can manage decently in rain, but anything other than that, skates! You can get a lot more mileage out of them and they are cheaper across the board, which is the big plus of those tires.
I got the toyo at 2s and so far have had good luck, I went through some deep snow and mud just fine and then as soon as they cleaned out on the highway they were smooth and quiet. Best features for me are the 50k mile warranty and e rating in the size I wanted (35x12.5r20) good luck
I have had my Toyo Open Country AT 2 Xtremes 35" for 5,000 kms now and spend 90% of my time doing 80+ km/h. They don't make any drone noise on the hwy even at higher speeds. Overall I am happy with them but we will see how long they last. People on here seem to be impressed with their tread life.
The Goodyear Silent Armor that you currently use have the "mountain snowflake" stamp on the tires. That is all I ever use anymore. We get snow where I live. The owners of the shop where I buy tires put them on their own trucks. I buy the Silent Armor Pro-Grade; they have a better side wall.
I actually think that is what is on my truck now. They seem pretty good. I think you guys have talked me into going with an all terrain. I am also thinking about looking at some Coopers, they seem to be gaining some ground in my mind on Goodyear.
I run bridgestone dueler revo 2's on both my trucks and love them. Works great in the mud and snow. I got 52k on my last set. Good investment in my book
I also run the duelers. Nice tire. Quiet. But I get nowhere near 52k out of them. It doesn't help they are prolly spinning 5% of the time. Ahaha.
