So i found a 06 Cummins Mega Cab that i want to buy, it has 140,000 miles on it and they was 32000$ for it. My questions are what kinda things do i need to look for on the truck and what would be a fair price for the truck. and also what would you guys recommend me doing to the truck if i did buy it? thank you.
That seems to be between $8k-$10k too much depending on what's been done to it. What kind of wheels, condition of tires, body, paint, ect... most of all does it has new injectors? Unless its been fixed up real nice then keep looking.
06 is the only year you can get a mega cab and the 5.9 so they are a somewhat rare breed. OP didn't specify transmission but if it is a G56 it is even more rare and thus more valuable to the right buyer.
My truck is an 06, 5.9 mega with the G56 and has 160k on it. Based on the market around here I would price it around $28-30k if I tried to sell it. May be different in other states, but the 5.9s are commanding big prices these days around here.
It is a laramie and as far as ik the injectors havent been touched im deployed right now so my wife and father inlaw will be looking at it. it has aftermarket wheels on it and a leveling kits and thats all i can see from the Pics it dont look like anything has been changed under the hood. O and i KBB it and its valued at 22,500 and NADA valued at 30k. i would love to get it for the 22k.
In my experience KBB means absolutely squat. The numbers are way off and no dealers ever even consider it. NADA is much closer to realistic.
I use NADA to get in the ballpark, then you have to check out the market and see what things are going for.
Like I said my truck is worth a lot in Idaho. In Texas or another state that has tons of trucks available it might not be worth as much.
I don't think you are going to get it for the $22k. I'll give you my buying experience if that helps.
I looked for months for a mega 5.9. I finally found a CL post that was 45 days old, I texted the number and by some miracle she still had the truck. I called and was informed that she had lost her second job and the truck was either going back to the bank, or to a local dealer for pennies on the dollar as she was unable to make her payment that was due 10 days from when I called her.
I drove 2 hours to take a look. The truck was not in great condition. The inside was filthly, horse hair, e, dirt, dust, seats and carpet stained, etc. The front end of the truck had recently eaten a Subaru, grill was good but bumper was all messed up. Tailgate had lots of run ins with a gooseneck trailer. And to top it off the side of the bed was dented and creased from a horse backing up into it.
I checked it for blowby and took it for a good drive. Engine ran great and G56 shifted fine, 4x4 worked, etc. Basically it was a good runner that just looked like hell.
The seller was about to give it away to some dealer that had been pestering her, I bought her out for a bit less than she owed at $21k even. it had 140k on it at the time.
This was two years ago and the good mega 5.9s have just gone up and up in price since then. I fixed almost all the cosmetic issues and spruced up some other things. Like I said I would start at $30k and see where I got if I wanted to sell. Based on the market around here I would be right in the ballpark for a 5.9 mega with the G56.
All that said, my dad has a 2007.5 6.7 with the 68 auto. We bought at the same time, his truck only had 16k miles on it. We deleted right away and the truck has been flawless. I would not be afraid to go to a 6.7 if I knew it had been deleted properly and early. Only thing is he sweats bullets when it is time for emissions inspection, I roll in with confidence and the bellow of my 5" TBE.
i bought my truck with 72,xxx miles not a mega but very clean with lots of extras for 28,500 in california if that helps at all its a 4x4 slt lift new tires, wheels, programmer, tool box and a bunch of other stuff
Thanks so much for your help, i have been looking at this truck for probley 7 or 8 months now i just didnt want to do anything because i didnt want it to sit for how ever long i will be gone for but now its getting around that time for me to be back im starting to look hard.
About KBB and NADA they have another truck on there lot and they want 30k for and NADA value is like 22500 and KBB is 29k so im not sure what to think about that.
i think if i took the 2 numbers and went in the middle about 26k i think it would be fair.
Now i have never had a diesel before what kinds things do i need to be aware of with this truck??
I just bought my sig truck with more modifications than I could fit in the signature in perfect condition with 134,000 miles on it for 32k. I was shopping for a stock mega with plans to do everything the truck I bought had done already, so I opted to pay a little more and not have to penny up for the mods myself. Stock MCs are going anywhere from 26-30k here with higher miles than what I bought into. I got a whole lot more truck for 32 than what you're looking into. I'd say that price is too high as well.
I am no diesel expert but my diesel guy told me to check for blowby as the number one thing to worry about. I took a different truck to him and he showed me that it had tons of blowby, I steered clear of that one.
Take the oil filler cap off while the truck is running, if you see a lot of smoke coming out of the hole, it has blowby. Put the cap upside down over the hole to let the smoke build up then take it off and look. A good engine will have little to no smoke, an engine with problems that are about to appear will blow a lot of smoke. The first truck I looked at blew the cap off the hole. My guy said it was doomed.
The other thing he said was make sure they don't start it before you get there. Some engine issues will cause the truck to be hard to start until warmed up, so dealers will warm the truck up when they know you are coming so when you jump in it starts right up. You want to be the one to start it cold.
Other than that, the front end of dodge trucks is crap so you can check balljoints, steering linkages and such. I have never done much as far as this goes. My steering is a bit loose but it tracks straight and I don't have death wobble so I am leaving it alone for now.
If the auto tranny has been abused it will be on it's way out soon. Be aware of how it shifts.
And check for signs of a tuner. Some say to stay away from tuned trucks, especially with autos. People will throw a tuner on, run a hot tune, and have lots of fun until the tranny starts acting up. When they figure out a built tranny is big money they trade the truck in.
Auto vs. Manual is all up to you and your preference. Best advise is to drive both and decide what you like.
Personally I don't like the auto that came with the 5.9, I test drove a few and was never happy with the way it shifted and when it shifted. I was coming from an 05 1500 with the hemi and auto 5 speed that drove me nuts the way it shifted so I was leaning manual anyway.
I like to be able to put the tranny where I want it and not have to dance around on the gas pedal to make the computer do what I want it to. Especially when towing!
I have towed the same load with my G56 and my dad's 6 speed auto (not the auto you are looking at). His auto is much much better than the older 4 speed but I still preferred my manual trans. The computer can try, but it is never going to be able to judge what gear is needed as well as a person can.
All that said you have to be comfy with rowing the gears. If I had a long commute with lots of traffic I would go auto. My commute is 12 miles and not a ton of traffic so I don't mind it. Also you are not going to win any races rowing the gears in a truck like this.
But.... the best thing about a G56?? It scares my wife to death, she has never even considered trying to drive my truck!
Aarondb4 thanks alot for all the information you have helped me out a lot. im going to keep looking but im still going to have them go take a look at that truck and see what they say and if i can get them down on the price.
where are you located ? i would say if it seems all good and is clean with no rust try 27-28 and go from there as you can always go up but its hard to go down in price once you have mentioned a price already .
I have an 06 mega with a g56 170,000 and I have it posted on my local CL for 29,000 and get frequent calls , but never could part with it !
