Alright guys I'm new to the diesel world!! But I have an 06 cummins 3500 mainly stock. I run a smarty sr, PAC brake, afe intake and maybe a few more options but I couldn't tell you what they are. When I bought this truck it ran like a dream and now it still does I'm just experiencing a clunking noise when I let off the accelerator. I'm almost positive it's the exhaust but I'm not sure, cause it only does this when driving. Also the mileage went down about two mpg the last few weeks. Any ideas or similar experiences would be greatly appreciated.
A month or so after my dually swap I started hearing a clunk when going from reverse to park as well as park to reverse. It turned out that the driveshaft was not torqued properly thus having slop in the pinion yoke. It should only take a few minutes to check and couldnt hurt to retorque everything just to eliminate one potential cause.
It is an automatic it seems to shift fine. I checked the steering column and it seems fine same with the u joints. I've checked the diagnostics with my smarty and nothing comes up. I've also checked the down pipe and everything is tight there. I'm a little lost on what to check next. Thanks for all the ideas and input!!!
Have you used 4 low recently?
I had a solid clunk in the same way and it turned out the t-case needed some attention.
The shift forks were worn badly and it was only partially engaging causing a clunk when it did engage.

Alright guys I appreciate all the comments!!! I believe I found the problem to be a leak in the exhaust. When I press on the pedal and let off quickly it will suck air into exhaust and make a clunking sound or popping noise. I am ready to replace the stock exhaust anyway and go to 4" turbo back anyway. Again I do appreciate it
