Has anyone seen an error on their odometer no buS? I installed a iPodtoCar last night, then took the wife out for pie, when I started cranked it back up, I didn't have any gauges, (including tach and speedo) although I had gauge lights and the radio would only switch between AM and FM.
I pulled the dash back apart this morning thinking I'd knocked loose a plug in the gauge cluster, and hitting bumps shook it out the rest of the way, but I didn't see anything. I got it all apart, checked the plugs turned the key again, and problem had disappeared. I hate it when that happens, without finding a problem, and solving it I'll be wondering when it's going to happen again. The only thing I saw that might have done it is it looks like the previous owner had tapped into the radio wires at one time or another and one of them might have shorted out to the frame.
The only other thing I can think of is there's some kind of self check that the computer does that if there's a disk changer installed, (iPod2Car plugs into the radio and makes an iPod look like a remote CD changer) and the iPod isn't giving the right response. That wouldn't make much sense though, if something smashed the factory CD changer you'd loose all your gauges?
:fist:

Jus Cruisin:
It took three trips to the dealer and 2 computers along with cleaning connectors to fix it.
Ugh, that's not at all what I was hoping for.
Well, it seems to have progressed to an intermittent issue. Saturday night it hard failed, I didn't have gauges for the whole trip home, since I took it apart Sunday morning every once in a while I'll get the error "ding" and if I look down really quickly the "low fuel" light will flash, but it's not long enough to make the gauges drop.
A possibly related issue, the HVAC control assy lights are intermittent. I can still control the fan, heat, etc, but no lights. It's only noticeable in the dark though, and the gauges are still working when the lights are out. I guess my next step is getting a can of contact cleaner and hosing everything down.

That seriously sounds like a loose or pushed-in pin on a connector behind the dash somewhere. Maybe a ground wire. Odd though that it would be affecting your instruments. That is not the part of the dash that you had torn apart.

Well, I was going to wait until the Quadzilla Commander came in to take the dash back apart, but...
Thursday morning I went out to start it and it cranked slow before firing. I figured it was cold, the oil was thick, so I didn't think anything of it, let it warm up and drove it to work.
Thursday evening, I went out and it wouldn't crank so I got a jump start from a friend (Did you know VW's put the battery under the driver's seat now?) :fist: Anyway, I drove home, parked, about a half hour later I went back out, cranked it up and drove it in the barn and put it on the charger all night so I could get to work yesterday.
I haven't had any problems with it since, but I have the Dash halfway apart today... I just came in to check the manual on how to take apart the center console.
I'm thinking I have a bare wire somewhere deep in, and when I took the dash apart the first time pulling on the wiring harness repositioned it so that it will ground itself out every so often. If it happens to ground out when I park and shut it off it drains the batteries.

Finally got the dash apart… looks like I didn’t dig deep enough to see all the rigging that the previous owner did. He’d tapped into the Red wire on the radio harness, and the chassis ground and then run the wires over by the parking brake, where they ended.
He’d also stripped the Green/Red and Red/Yellow speaker wires. I can only assume this was for some kind of hands free cell phone device.
I’ve wrapped the wires individually, and wrapped the harness, and stripped out every bit of non-OEM wiring from under the dash. (there was a switch that went to back up lights mounted under the rear bumper in there too) I’ll tap into the fuse box and re-wire the lights later.
All the pins on all the connectors look good, and I don’t see anything else out of the ordinary.
I checked www.UPS.com and the Quadzilla Commander arrived at the Ft-Worth terminal at 4:17am today, I’m debating if I want to leave it apart until it arrives. Anyone know off the top of their head if UPS delivers on Sunday?
Does anyone have any advice on what else to check before I button it back up?

The Dash is back together. I didn’t see anything else, but I figured I’d better get it back together before I lost daylight. Turns out I made it just in time.
Time will tell.

Well, it didn't fix it. I got the Quadzilla Commander installed yesterday though, whatever it is seems to be effecting it too, the Commander will flash off, and then come right back on. Except that the commander seems to be more sensitive to it.
If that's it, that leaves a bad connection in fuse #28 or the body to Chassis ground. I'm out of daylight for today, but I think that's what I'll check in the morning.

I seem to have the same problem...My truck only has 13,000km on it and it is showing the same symptoms. I took it to the dealer and they reset the error codes and told me that they have seen this problem before and not to worry...
Clearing the error codes fixed it?! Mine is still doing it. It wasn't the commander, that was caused buy how I had routed the wired under the dash... every time I hit the clutch it was unplugging it just enough to cause it to reboot.
