The only coolant flush I would do is Cummins system restore. It is acid and made by Cummins.
It takes one dose then about 6 drain and fills to get the water crystal clear. I think it's better to have to wait for the thermostat because your also acid cleaning it and letting the acid work in through the block and radiator etc,,,
Sure you could do it without the thermostat but I don't think it would clean it as good.
just did a flush on mine about a month ago. pulled the thermostat out, bolted the t-stat housing back up. I drained the radiator and filled the thing up with distilled, ran the engine for 5 min or so and repeated 3 or 4 time still it started draining clear. Since the whats in the radiator and whats in the engine is about the same volume, I filled the radiator back up on the final flush with unmixed coolant so it would mix with what distilled was left in the block to get my 50/50 mix. after that put a new seal on the t-stat, put it back in and youre good to go
