Heater Grid. Right where the intake horn comes out of the intercooler and goes into the motor is a grid that gets hot when electricity is applied to it. This warms the air entering a cold engine so that the air, when compressed, will be warm enough to support combustion.

"Other" diesels perform this task with glow plugs.
