So I just finished installing my auxiliary tank. Me and the wife headed out for a coffee and grab some fuel. Five minutes into my ride I get pulled over for going through a yellow light (unreal) Then the officer who didn't look older than my oldest son who's 14 starts looking at my exhaust tip. He says your truck is pretty loud, did you do anything to the exhaust? I said no, it is no different than a f150 or any other truck with a exhaust tip. Now he never even bothered to look under the truck and anywhere else. Just wrote me a ticket for modifying the exhaust saying the tip is classified as modifying the exhaust. Anyone else get pulled over for this before.

I didn't lie about it. I just answered the questions he was asking. My feeling was if he was to lazy to look under the truck and keep asking about the tip, then that is what I was gonna answer. If he looked under the truck and knew what he was looking for. He would see everything is gone. I was expecting him to crawl underneath and have a look when he said my truck was pretty loud. But when he just looked at the tip and came back and asked about the tip thats all I answered. Most towns around here depend on ticket revenue as their main income. They will usually write ya for 2-3 miles over when they are shooting radar.
I think he knew you were deleted and actually cut you a break by just citing you for messing with the exhaust tip. I think it was a wink wink kinda deal. He probably knew you were deleted before he even pulled you over. He was probably going to let you off if you just told him the truth.
And then when you lied about it he then decided to write the ticket.
I'll say that if he asked "did you do anything to the exhaust?" And you said "no", you ARE lying. If all you did is add a tip, that's still "doing something to the exhaust". Should adding a tip get you a ticket? Hell no!
When you deleted, did you pull any of the stock exhaust parts like the dpf or cat out? I'm guessing with the 5" Flopro in your sig, you did a bunch more than just adding a tip. You earned that ticket. Enjoy it and be glad he didn't bother to look underneath or under the hood. It sounds like you could have faired a bunch worse!
Guzzler is correct here. Policemen know the answers to questions they ask you. They just want to see if you are going to LIE when you answer. Which you DID. You got a ticket. Go figure.
Son, You are definitely a threat to road safety. Unless he (the cop) was certified as vehicle inspector he's only guessing and the noise ticket will be dropped. Unfortunately you gotta go to court. I'm not sure I'd be willing to tell a stranger, cop or otherwise all my modifications. This not a society that accepts truth without judgement. You are not required to tell the police the color of your underwear just because it's the truth.
Your exactly right.
I also see there is a few guys from LA responding. In NYS, it is all about the revenue. The traffic court is really a big joke. The judge WILL not let you plead guilty to a speeding ticket or any other moving violation. They will stop you in your tracks and tell you NO you plead not guilty to speeding or having a tip on the exhaust. The judge then reduces your ticket to a non moving violation say 2 parking tickets. At the amount he feels is correct for what you did wrong. Most cases its $150.00 per parking ticket. Then you pay the state fee of $79. And the town keeps the money brought in for their revenue. Traffic court here, you better get there a hr early, and plan on being there for at least 2-3 hrs. This is just a new one I never been nailed for. It's end of month quota i believe.
Of course you don't have to answer anything. But I've yet to determine what people think they are going to gain by lying and trying to be slick with their answers on a traffic stop.
Bingo. Telling me a lie not only doesn't get you out of a ticket, it increases your chances of getting additional tickets. Catching a smart butt attitude compounds this phenomenon.
Penal Code # in LA for "Telling me a Lie" please..........????????? Maybe should be "Good morning/afternoon/evening, are you aware of why I stopped you, but be aware, do you swear to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, so help you God, that is if you believe in him......... And the "smart butt attitude compounds this", well, ever wonder why people don't strike up a social conversation with you? Your perception of an attitude or lack thereof as being "smart butt" which then "compounds this phenomenon" of I guess "increases your chances of getting additional tickets"???? As my friend Joe Kenda would say..."Oh my, my, my".........
And there ladies and gentlemen is a smart butt. News flash - if you're pulled over it's not social hour. I have a job to do and will do it to the best of my abilities. You'll get treated with the same level of respect you show me. Telling lies may be respectful in your opinion, but not in mine. As I stated, most of the time when someone I pull over is cool and up front with me I cut them a lot of slack. If they have an attitude, much like your response, I will likely write them for everything I can.
But please tell us of your extensive knowledge and experience in law enforcement protocols.
He has a Facebook law degree just like everyone else who thinks they "know" the real laws
Yes not all law enforcement are car people, my wife being one of them. While we would be out driving she would ask me for visual and some auditory clues on what to look for in modified exhaust. One of the visual clues was a exhaust tip. It doesn't mean that the exhaust was modified but chances are it is, then you listen. If you can hear the exhaust its been modified.
And yes every truck I've owned has either been straight piped or had a aftermarket exhaust system.
yeah lying is legally allowed by the cops (and encouraged) to get you to say what they want to here or to solve it. its not cool if you did.
anyway i see no one asked if he was getting all over it making a loud noise, just that he lied, im sure all that answered wouldnt be upset at all.
but yeah if its modded i would prob just pay .
dude was just a d@#k sounds like. how many 10-30 yr old vehicle out there with no exhuast that fell off drove by while this ticket was issued.
I agree it's a bs ticket. I hate those answers. Just yesterday I was dealing with 3 guys,
"sir I'm supposed to take your drivers license as you come back revoked" I WASNT DRIVING.
"Hey man, its state law, your over 18 you need some form of state id, okay?" ITS ON MY KITCHEN TABLE AND I WASNT DRIVING
"Okay guys we can't be riding atvs out here, it's
Not your land, this is called trespassing" BUT I SAW TONS OF PEOPLE DOING IT LAST WEEKEND AND MY PEEPS TOLD ME I COULD"
see what I don't get it the lack of ability to answer straight forward questions with straight up answers. Why? Cause they were in the wrong. They danced around their answers.
If I asked someone in a ram Cummins if they modified their exhaust the answer is yes or no. Not it's the same as my f150 or any other truck I've owned.
My reply to you would have been, sir I'm not asking if it's the same exhaust, im asking if this exhaust was modified. I hate having to ask the same question 4 times to get an answer I should have gotten the first
Sorry Kodi , most people don't trust Cops. The last eight years has undermined much of the trust in America's establishment. I see the same distrust as Cops make their stops. It's gonna take time for us to work past these harmful years. Ten per cent of America now carry. Poverty reins as invaders line up for Generous benefits. Then politician a most harmful lot ....selling us out for a new dem vote. Things are going so well .....and progressive.
I think you very lucky by just getting a ticket for "the tip". Could you not also be compelled to restore your truck to "stock"? Seems to me you could potentially get a ticket every time you took the truck out.
"did you do anything to the exhaust? I said no" You are deleted then you tell us you did not lie, you 100% lied. Sounds like he gave you a break, just because he was young does not mean he was stupid, he probably 100% knew you were lying to him, everyone here knows you were lying to him.
Pay the ticket, fighting it could cause much bigger trouble for you. A judge will not take your word for it nothing was modified, they will want proof nothing was modified.
Often times when a person who is good natured and doesn't want to lie or doesn't often lie they will immediately lie, but feel the need to continue to talk trying to change the subject or justify the lie to themselves or try to throw you off track.
"Did you modify the exhaust"
"No, it's the same as on my f150 or any other truck I've owned"
Well "no" is the lie, then it's doubled down on bc it's not the same as the exhaust on your f150 or any other truck so long as any other truck wasn't the same as the truck your driving therefore you compounded one lie with another. A person who has no problem with lying would simply say nope, exhaust is not modified. You'll also notice the exhaust tip came up often, it was a moot fact after the point bc the exhaust was modified so an exhaust tip doesn't matter, but bc the mere presence of an exhaust tip on stock exhaust is a non issue it's battled to take the focus of the actual exhaust.
Point being, exhaust may not be a primary offense where you live, it may be, but if it's not and the exhaust caught the officers attention, the yellow light was the primary offense he neeeed to pull you for your illegal exhaust. He probably knew exactly what he was dealing with and you answered all the questions incorectly
He probably lives in a town where the officers know who's truck has what on it along with everybody else.We won't hear the whole truth but going thru a yellow light probably meant he should/could of stopped but decided to roll coal and blow through it.The officer was right there and decided to stop him as he should, and probably give him a verbal warning. But when he starts lying about his exhaust then yeah expect to get some literature in hand.
I've never had a cop question exhaust but I have always had good luck telling the truth and being respectful.
I've had a few verbal warnings the last few times I've been pulled over. I admitted what I did and apologized for my actions. Being respectful and straight with a cop seems to be the most effective. I will say I've dealt with a few that have been real jerks but most have been fine.
Monday morning quarterbacking and everyone has an opinion. I feel for the OP because he posted what he feels is a BS ticket and attitude by LEO and I get it. I am not sure what would happen in TX, but times are a changing and revenue is the name of the game. The lines for the LEO are blurred, in my opinion.
My wife is Prob'y Officer and I about come out of my skin every time she reads me an arrest report and what her knuckle headed criminals say and do with LEO's. You are required to answer name and DOB. You are not required to answer anything else. A partial truth can go either way, but a flat NO and it is a lie, has repercussions. I prefer just to be polite, provide my license and insurance. Let them do the talking and take the ticket if I get one. No good can come from talking to a LEO after they have initiated contact and stopped you. They can trap you and are trained in how to exact information from you. "They have a job to do" as quoted in previous post [emoji6]
Take the ticket, do not lie - do not answer. Let the attorney deal with it for you. What happens on the street is different in front of a judge.
My background is: degree in criminology, small business owner. My wife has a degree in criminology, active in the Legal business. My life long dream was LEO - Detective - Attorney. GOD had other plans and I am thankful for that, because 25 years later, I realize I would have been a terrible LEO and make more than my attorney today, LOL.
Sorry you got ticket. I have not deleted my truck and this makes me think I should not bother.

This has been the case for a very long time. It should surprise no one that many police departments and local governments use its citizens as a cash-cow.
Oh, and one last thing; police officers have sworn an oath to support and defend the constitution. For him to use his authority to enforce a non-law (lying) shows that he's a corrupt fascist. Cops like that are a cancer and ruin the work the good ones accomplish. I've got nothing against the boys in blue; just the ones who joined for the power, status, and control over others.
I'm just glad that not everyone in this thread is jumping to the conclusion that the folks in blue are at fault here.
Then the officer who didn't look older than my oldest son who's 14 starts looking at my exhaust tip. He says your truck is pretty loud, did you do anything to the exhaust? I said no, it is no different than a f150 or any other truck with a exhaust tip.
Facts matter. This is a lie to a police officer who was disparaged at the start about how young he is -- before we even got the facts.
If your truck is deleted and you say that the exhaust isn't modified any more than a F150 (gasoline truck) that's like saying "I'm not bald, I have every bit as much hair as Stone Cold Steve Austin or Dr. Evil."
I get weary of threads where people jump to the conclusion that the folks in blue are at fault.
I trust and like police officers. I want them in my neighborhood. If I do something wrong and get a ticket I won't be happy but it's on me. I try to follow traffic laws but If I got a ticket every time I fail, I would be walking. Somehow, I just think this is about more than an aftermarket tip on the exhaust. A "yellow" light, some speed, smoke and noise, then a little attitude. If the officer is wrong I hope you win in court.

If Leo's didn't write tickets everyone would say "what do you do all day", "must be nice to get paid to do nothing ". A degree in criminology isn't the same as being a Leo and having a understanding of the hundreds of VTL and hundreds of other laws. NYS VTL law book is about 4" thick of what I'd consider useless laws but like any law or rules were created to not only keep people safe but were created because enough people were being hurt because of it or were a modified version of a federal law. NY it's illegal to have a modified exhaust but a vehicle with a modified exhaust will pass inspection. Diesels are visual only, gas needs to have cats to pass. Every state has different lift laws. NY is 2" taller than stock, 2 tire sizes bigger than oem and I don't recall the max bumper height. This law is only really used as a "reason" to pull someone over. Do all Leo's in nys know the lift law, probably not. Is it enforced, absolutely not. At least in my area I've never heard of anyone getting a ticket for it. But if you are caught lying to a officer and he took offense to it I can almost guarantee they'd go through the VTL and find everything violation. Most are "fix it" tickets and get dismissed.

Yes, this is exactly the type of non-sense I was talking about.
