2016 6.7 cummins exhaust smell

Hey guys went on my first decent trip in the truck last week. we left during a snow storm in NJ to go to Washington DC. about an hour into the trip I started smelling a kerosene type smell coming through the vents. I figured it was the additive smell I was smelling. after a few minutes it went away, and just a little while ago ran to 711 for coffee and sun flower seeds and the same thing again whiling pulling into my driveway. Has anyone experienced this? if so is it normal or is the a hole or something in my exhaust which is making it sometimes come into the cab strongly like that? thanks

Not normal unless the wind is blowing pretty good and you're in traffic or something.

I would guess something like EGR leak or exhaust leak. Look for soot.

Many have experienced something similar.

Mine does it during regen if I'm sitting still or moving very slowly, then goes away as you start moving along. I usually turn the HVAC to recirculating air so it's not pulling in outside air.

Same here. Except sometimes i think my truck is in regen and it is another diesel with me at a light or such. It is normal to have the smell from the tail pipe get sucked into the air vents if there is no wind or a slight wind blowing the fumes from back to front.

Yes, and there is a TSB out about it. I had it on my 2017.

Seems to occur when in Regen only, and typically at low speeds or when stopped. Just had it into the dealer to refresh, haven't had it occur yet, and when I picked it up from the dealer it was in regen.

Hoping that it is permanently fixed.

also I had the truck in a month ago because it making noise in the rear end when I shifted the truck, also when I turn the key on it has a check engine light but once I start it its off , I don't remember it ever being there, I bought a blue driver scanner after checking out these sites and came back nothing and all was good, I'm at 15k miles now, how often do you guys bring it in for service?

My trucks have had a check engine light with key on and motor off. I think it is normal. It is a sort of systems and bulb check. I also have the electronic throttle light and several others like air bag and such flash. All normal.
