Well -- After a year truckless....

Hey All! Long time....

In the fall / winter of 2015 I sold my 2010 and 2013. Been truckless since. Accomplished my personal financial goals and now I'm starting to look around again. Wanted to go slightly different and am 100% open-minded. I don't have a need for a HD truck. But I'm not a 1/2 ton fan as it doesn't seem like a "real truck" to me.

So kinda starting from scratch. At the top of my list this time is a 2017 2500 4x2 or 4x4 Crew / Shortbed 6.7 OR 6.4 gasser. Tradesman OR SLT. Daily driver with light and infrequent towing. Tempted very much to go 6.4L this time.

Just weighing everything and wanted to give a shout out to all -- old friends I've missed and people who have joined in the last year.

Hey Boyd! Nice to hear from you. We're all doing good, thanks for asking. How are you and your pack doing?

Speaking of the dogs, it's one of the reasons why I'm thinking about a 4x2. Little bit lower to the ground for the pooches.

We are doing well too!

The 4x2 would be nicer for sure, as far as loading up the crew. You don't really run into weather in your travels do you?

Its also pretty hard to ignore the "discount" when going with the 6.4. The diesel does command a premium.

My only issue would be the downshifting of the hemi in the mountains. Other than that . Color is key ... suspension #1

So, you want a "real truck". You know you are not going to be happy with a gasser. You are on this forum because you really want a 4x4 diesel real truck. If you can afford it, get it.

I disagree on the half ton comment. A 1500 with the 6.5 bed, 4 corner air suspension (lower it automatically for the pups when they are getting in), and the Hemi sounds perfect for you.

Welcome back Jay, your banter and insight has been missed. Go drive a 6.4 or better yet rent one and see how you like it. I've driven diesels since 2004 and don't like the way a gasser feels. On the same token, my 14 was so problematic, I'm going to sell it and keep away from DPF trucks for a while, my 2002 suits me fine.

I agree, to the OP, I had a 2014 Ram 1500 Hemi with the 8 speed auto. I highly recommend you test drive one.

That truck rode like a dream, had crazy acceleration, averaged 18 mpg total, 25.5 highway. The 8 speed in that truck was absolutely amazing.

If I wasn't a stick shift guy and needing a 'work truck' I would have kept that truck. It was top notch.

Ooops! I think my 1500 / 1/2 ton comment was taken out of context. I think they're fine! I just would rather have a 2500.

I've had 7 Ram Diesel trucks since 1994. All but 2 have been manuals. Last two G56's. A couple were 4x2. The rest 4x4. Loved them all. Each time I would test drive a 1500 and give it a shot. Didn't work for me.

This is an emotional / fun choice. Not a practical one. The real decisions for me is 4x4 vs 4x2 and 6.7 vs 6.4, Tradesman vs SLT, ordered vs. off the lot, fleet color or or not, etc...

I appreciate the feedback!

If it's a fun thing , I would go with the 1500 , and a few extra bells and whistles, For your HARD earned money .. ..... Make the whole experience fun by taking several visits to your dealer.. making the sales Dept wiggle and squirm...
