Had to steal part of an old thread title for this. My very first CEL in 41,000 came just after the loud bang, and loss of 2-6 gears in my 68rfe...:grin2:
I don't have the codes, but I hope the thing is totally fubar so they bolt in a complete unit! Cross y'all's fingers for me!
And the manual is outdated, untrustworthy and can't hold a candle to autos. Sorry for your luck man, at least you see the good in it. Now if you can only get that 68 to blow every 40-50k that truck will last forever. Screw fluid changes, tranny swaps my man.
The last half of you statement surely contradicts the first half of your statement. I would hardly call a G56 "untrustworthy". Put a big clutch in it and your good to go.
Luckily I was out of town on my way to work and the dealer was only a few miles from where it let go, so I limped it in. The dealer has recently hired an old friend as shop foreman, and a long time supplier/acquaintance as head service writer. I'm hoping this leads to a better result, although they are slamming busy so who knows...
P0734 "Gear ratio error in 4th" is what they have for codes. Reality is the end of one of the actuator pistons in the valve body broke off. So the plan is to replace the whole valve body. Too bad Ram is on national back order!
At least the 6.0 V8 in my rental GMC does GREAT burn outs!

Update time: So I was getting the run around from the dealer that has my truck, and they were being vague. "It could be a couple of weeks for the part since its on national backorder" etc etc. After 7 days without it, I called the dealer I bought it from and asked their parts guy to check. It took him about 17 seconds to find 2 of the valve bodies up north. He gives me the numbers of the two dealers showing stock.
I call the first dealer. "Yup we got it". Ok. Good. But he won't sell it to the dealer who has my truck. Hmmm. The parts guy offers to call Mopar and see what the deal is with the supply on the valve body. Progress!
He calls me back and says "bad news, the supplier is in the middle of moving their factory and will be offline for at least another 4 weeks. Then once they start production it'll be 2-3 weeks before Mopar gets them." The other fun fact is that Ram returned all their current stock to the supplier as defective.
At this point I'm getting pissed/amused. It's ridiculous. So I have put my name on the one up north, but nobody at Ram can tell me if or when I'd get reimbursed if I pay for it, and the one dealer says "if you supply the part, you have to pay labor too as its not warranty work if you bring the part". Did I mention it's still under warranty???
Now I'm even more pissed/amused. I call FCA customer care and they say they don't know if or how I'd get reimbursed or even if they will continue to pay for my rental. But they did suggest that they're rather pay the rental fees for up to 50 more days ($3200) than pay the extra $100 to pay retail on the part I found.
I can't wait to hear what the "level 2 FCA agent" has to say when they decide to call me back!
Now the dealer who has the part up north refuses to sell it to me as well. The fun just never stops! I'm going to ask Ram to just ship a complete trans out so we can take the valve body out of it. I give that about a 2% chance of being succesful.
Nice to hear from you Adam! I thought maybe you had been sucked into one of the machines at your shop and and spat out the other side as a walker, and some old guy in a home was using you to shuffle down the hall to dribble out a pee!
Yeah, I've already been looking at aftermarket VBs. I'm sure since the factory that builds the stock ones DOESNT ACTUALLY EXIST at this point they'll jump right on that. I bet they even offer to put factory warranty on the Revmax parts too!
Maybe the Asian tranny in my Land a Cruiser will bolt right in? It is actually the nicest auto trans I've ever driven!
And riddle me this... Why is the tow rating HIGHER for the 68rfe than it is for the HD Asian tranny? (Ok, it's a semi rhetorical question, since I know it's only 150 lbs more, which is probably how much more the Asian weighs). But seriously, shouldn't the truck with the HD trans be rated higher for towing capacity than the "regular" tranny?
Wow I forgot all about that lol, it's funny how we have all come together in thread just like the other one. Good luck on your trans issue fixed hopefully it will be taken care of.
I pm'd "TransEngineer" on here, and he gave me info on a possible remedy. It depends on whether or not the retainer head popped off, or the retainer screw broke out part of the VB. If the service dept would ever answer their phone, it would help...
I keep hearing the Final Jeopardy theme in my head every time I think about my truck these days. I still haven't heard anything on part availability. It's like FCA figures if they stall long enough, one of two things will happen: 1. The part will magically appear, even though they are not currently making any, or 2. I will somehow forget that I own (and am paying for) a $50,000 lawn ornament.
Since neither is likely to happen, I got my friend who I bought the truck from, and the GM at his dealership to get involved. Between myself and my brother, we have bought 5 trucks or Jeeps from the same guy in the last 5 years, and my brother built our friend's HD bagger (he is the business manager at my local dealer). They are going to put some pressure on the regional service rep to get the situation resolved.
I traded the 6.0 V8 gasser rental in for a Dirtymax/Allison Silverado yesterday. At least I'm back in a diesel, but it's really a car. I can't believe people actually pay money for these things! I'm not a brand loyalist in the strict sense of the word, but have always figured if you are buying a diesel truck, it's a Dodge (or 7.3 Ford if no a Cummins trucks are left on the planet). Driving the Chebbie really confirms it.
In your dealings with the FCA mothership, be sure to mention that you are still paying the loan on the lawn ornament and ask them to make a months payment...... or two. When my 2014 was stuck in repair land limbo for the many months it was, they offered to reimburse me for a months loan payment.....which stung as I paid cash. Also, push them for a free maxcare warranty on the truck as you have lost your confidence in the vehicle......:wink2: That worked for me....:smile2:
Well, I'm back in my own truck! What a relief! I still have no idea what would cause a person to pay good money for a GM diesel. I thought the Allison was good, but I didn't care for anything else.
Everything seems to be working as it should with my truck. Glad the nightmare is over!
Just a quick update. After driving the truck for a couple of weeks, I realized the shifting was all over the place. It took SEVEN WEEKS to get the paperwork from the idiot dealership that did the trans work and it was awfully vague. So I sent my vin to one of our members on here who is a transmission engineer (and helped design the 68RFE). He looked up what they did and more importantly what they didn't do. No re-learn and there was a TCM flash for my truck too. I took it back in to my purchasing dealer and they did the flash and re-learn. It's 10x better now. Makes me so mad at the idiots that call themselves "technicians"!
