What is this item?

I tried to get a picture of it, but its tucked back in an area that won't show up. I first thought it was my lift pump, but after looking at the service manual, I'm pretty sure my lift pump had been moved to the tank. There is nothing attached to the back of my fuel filter bowl, and there is written on the radiator support that the lift pump was replaced at 75,000 miles.

The item in question sits farther back and closer to the engine than the fuel filter bowl. Its kind of long and skinny(runs up and down), black in color, and has what looks like cooling fins, almost like heat sinks. Its on the drivers side of the engine, towards the back. It seems like I've read of some kind of heat exchanger for the transmission? Is that what this is?

Watch that puppy. When you tube off turbo your trans fluid pressure goes to zip, but since the coolant is hot it stays at pressure. Factor in a few hundred thousand on the clock and the coolant will push through the separator, and you'll have coolant in the tranny and oil in your coolant. If you're luck it will kill the electronics in your tranny before it completely destroys it, when they happens, drop the pan asap. But if your not lucky, goodbye transmission and you'll have to flush cooling system and probably replace all you hoses since oil will make them go bad.

Mine did this . Decided not to buy a new one ($1200 at stealership), instead just bypassed with standard hose for coolant and had a hydraulic line with pressure fittings for the tranny. Have't had any over heating issue with the TC.
