Several years ago. One of my drivers was hauling a wide load of steel plate from PA to GA. NC trooper pulled him over...checked permit then measured load.
I cannot remember the exact dimensions but it was about 112"w. I got the permit however I converted wrong and ordered it with
ONE INCH less than actual. $500.00 dollar fine and had to order new permit to boot.
What made me so mad about the ticket is this. I tried to comply with the laws and made a honest mistake. It did not put the load into another "class" being that one inch off, I could have understood that.
It cost more trying to run legal because I had to void the original permit plus one more, plus pay the fine. If I would have just told the driver to wing it, then it would have just been the fine.
Another irony was that when I ordered the second permit I told them we needed the exact same one except change width to ... and the NC permit office sent me back the wrong dimensions.
I called the NC DOT about it told them about the mistake on my part and about the second permit they messed up, but it didn't go anywhere.
Sorry for being long winded, but if you could not tell it makes me mad to this day.
