I'm not sure why there has been so much misinformation about 2nd gen axles.
It was 98 that I saw the outer wheel spindle that looked exactly like the 3500's. I assumed the 3500's were full D-80's and so was the odd ball 2500's that had the same spindles. I wondered why the D70 and D80 could hold the same lunch box lockers. So the axle shafts are actually D-70 axles, but 35 spline.
