The Drop Zone was declared surplus military property in the mid-1990's, as part of President Clinton's base closure crap. Per the disposal process in place, other federal agencies had first crack at obtaining the property, followed by state, local, and finally private entities. The local communities wanted to turn it into a park and a veteran's cemetery. Blue Chip Farms, which borders the field on one side and raises $$$$$ horses, was tired of all the noise from us, the FBI, CIA, Army, Secret Service, model airplane guys, and everyone else that used the place, and had enough clout to push through the plan that the feds create a wildlife sanctuary to ensure that there was never a peep from that field ever again. It's hard to fight something when the option to gain control of the site never left Washington.

The property in question is now known as Shawangunk Grasslands National Wildlife Refuge, and the only way that anything more than a motorized wheelchair will ever set foot on that property again is if the bird flu threatens humanity's survival to the point where we have to exterminate every living creature with wings. It's all about "compatible public use" now, and they are going as far as ripping up the runways and won't even let people park on them.

Official information for visitors:

Shawangunk Grasslands National Wildlife Refuge | Northeast Region, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service

Don't miss these quotes:

* Use of motorized vehicles is prohibited throughout the refuge. Motorized vehicles disturb wildlife, can cause soil erosion, disturb other refuge visitors, and shatter the tranquility of the refuge.

* Jogging is not allowed on refuge trails. The quieter you walk, the less likely you are to disturb the wildlife adjacent to the trail.

* Bicycling is not allowed anywhere on the refuge. Bicycling erodes nature trails, disturbs refuge visitors and can disturb wildlife.

* Horseback riding is not allowed anywhere on the refuge. Horses erode nature trails, disturb other refuge visitors, and leave non-native weed seeds in horse droppings.

Note that I don't see a restriction on breathing by visitors...yet.

Put a fork in it, the Drop Zone is done.....
