I have also experienced this problem on my '01 Cummins H.O. 6-speed. The truck is all stock, with only 90K easy miles on her. Sometimes after long highway cruises, the idle stays at 1000ish- 'till I shut it off. Upon next start, everything returns to normal. One time is actually gave me a "Check Engine" light, but cleared out after a few miles. I had the local Dodge dealer scan codes, and he said that the "APPS" had shown up on faults. That's the Accelerator Pedal Position Sensor. I figured I'd just replace it, until I learned that it was about $600. I wound up doing nothing at all, and the truck has not acted-up since.
Since I'm sure that something goofy is going on, I will be interested in seeing where this thread goes....
