2008 68RFE Going into Limp Mode and Overheating

The other day I was hauling pipe in with my pickup which just turned over to 80,000, (for those of you who don't farm hauling pipe is alot of moving 30 feet, stopping in gear and holding the brake for 15 seconds, moving another 30 feet for a 1/2 mile) and I was not driving during this time but when we went for dinner I got on the blacktop and gave it about half throttle and it went into limp mode for the first time in its life(Shifts from 1st to 4th and stays there and the TC won't lock up) so I looked at the Transmission temp and it was at 225*F which is the hottest I have ever seen it get, and it had been either idling or off(I think I shut it off but I can't remember for sure) for at least 5 minutes just before I got on the blacktop, then shortly after the engine light came on, so I stopped, shut it off and checked the codes and the 2 that came up were P0700 and P0871, and after I turned it back on it shifted fine. Then I shut it off for dinner and it was off for 45 minutes and started it back up and the engine light didn't come back on so I thought maybe I got lucky and I had caught a wire on the cornstalks was all, so I deleted the p0871 and I didn't have anymore trouble other than the transmission getting warmer than I thought it should, untill today when I hooked up the goose neck and hauled the bobcat again and it went into limp mode again. So do you have any suggestions on what this could be? I have searched this and everything that I have found says that the valve body is shot but I haven't found anything about why the transmission is getting hot. It will hit 175* doing 65MPH on a mostly flat gravel road when it is 70* and if I stop and put it in park and let it idle it will hit 195* in short order.

I talked to a diesel mechanic close to where I live and he thought that the overheating might be from a clutch pack sticking, so I am going to try and flush it and see if that helps any.

That isnt good though either way.. I wouldnt really think flushing would help a whole lot, if youve been through all the gears and it doesnt feel like its hanging in any i dont see why that would make sense.. id say its not good.. besides, in that kind of work you need a good tranny because youre always hauling.. especially with a hot damn 175 tune.. you farmers have money haha are you grain or livestock?

lol I'm grain. and I thought the valve body being shot sounded like it was the more likely culprit than a clutch pack sticking but I am not a mechanic. I might try a valve body just in case cause I really don't want to mess with trying to get a new transmission in with harvest a week or two away.

oh yeah you have the money hahaha im just messing with you.. farmers pay my bills so i know these things.. but yeah im thinking a valve body.. and if youre looking for a quick hp gain on your tranny id say valve body, tell your trans repairer to check the clutches, and then grab co-pilot to help that valve body maintain higher pressures (or does mcc do that?) id say with higher pressures and a valve body to do them id be comfortable saying the trans is 150 hp over stock.. never hurts to call ATS though

The P0871 is very likely caused by a worn SSV bore in the main valve body, so replacing that stands a good chance of fixing it.

The overheating is probably due to either how you were operating it (lots of low speed operation where you have little or no air flow through the cooler) or from running in limp-in. In limp-in, your Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) never engages, so you generate extra heat in the converter all the time, and it will definitely run hotter than usual.

P0700 is generic "please check TCM for additional fault codes" -- the TCM needs to be interrogated to find out what it thinks is faulting when it's going into limp mode....that is assuming that P0871 wasn't coming from the TCM but the PCM... Are those cruising temps unloaded (and define unloaded, you have a bunch of crap including a 1000lb tank of fuel or is it an open empty bed? )?

Hopefully it just got really heat soaked from the pipe moving. Might want to look at your trans cooler and make sure its clean/clear of debris

I checked the codes on the Mini Maxx and the P0700 was under the engine codes and the P0871 was under the transmission codes. And I had at least a half a tank of fuel, and I had 2 cement blocks, probably 20 gallons of diesel oil, a shovel, a montezuma toolbox full of tools, irrigation boots, post pounder and a roll of #9 wire in the bed.

Yeah I'd call that unloaded for sure -- I had a friend complaining of high trans temps...."unloaded" for him was something like 13k or so! Welding rig, Ford truck though. He's been looking at dodges
