I go out of my way to find a station with bio, runs better in the truck, and keeps it clean. if you never ran a batch before keep a spare fuel filter in the truck and tools to change it just in case. A good practice to do anyway. As for the ethanol and small engines, run super, much beter for all small engines, 2 strokes even more so.

Not all super is ethanol free though. Atleast not here in montana. There are a handful of stations that do specifically sell ethanol free premium/super gasolines though. My 2006 Harley night-rod can *definitely* tell the difference.

Page 84 in the 2011 Diesel Supplement

A maximum blend of 5% biodiesel meeting ASTM
specification D-6751 may be used with your Cummins
 diesel engine.

It also further states about No. 1 diesel:

No. 1 Ultra Low Sulfur diesel fuel should only be used
where extended arctic conditions (-10F or -23C) exist.

I've seen articles about the "20% approved" in the 2001/2002 and maybe 2003... 5.9 12v/24v/etc engines, IDK about prior to 2011 6.7L's but atleast for 2011 they're saying B5 and no more.

For 2004 RAM 3500 Diesels no biodiesel is actually apparently approved:

NOTE: As sufficient testing has not been completed,
organically blended diesel fuels (e.g. biodiesel, ethanol,
and methanol blends) are not recommended or approved
for use with your Cummins Diesel equipped Dodge Ram
Truck.

I am a fuel dispatcher, and I can tell you that over in Memphis, TN at the Valero terminal that is all you can get. Valero Terminal does not sell any Diesel that does not have at least 5% bio in it. Honestly 5% is not that much, and I doubt you would have any problems running it in your truck.

Does the water settle to the bottom of your 40oz ethanol tank in your cupboard (rye, vodka, rum etc)? Water settles to the bottom of all fuel storage tanks gas or diesel unless it combines with the Ethanol as you said. Ethanol and Methanol are missible in water so yes, they will absorb water and degrade your fuel.

Different densities, once the ethanol in gasoline absorbs water, it becomes heavier, and sinks out of the gasoline along with the water, drastically lowering the octane level of the gasoline. Large storage tanks are constantly having air mixed into them by virtue of filling and emptying. It adds up. A container of only ethanol is not going to behave the same as a container of gasoline that is mixed with ethanol. Normally they'll stay mixed together, but add water, and the water+ethanol mixture tends to settle out of the gasoline. It probably takes some amount of additive packages along with it too.

Makes sense for sure now that you explain it that way.

Given the questionable character of some of the Valero franchises in my neck of the woods, I wouldn't be surprised if they were just dumping the old grease from the burrito fryers into the diesel tank and sticking a B5 sticker on the pumps.
