What years are Pre DEF emissions

Anyone know what years are Pre- DEF emissions for Dodge, Ford and Chevy.
I am curious when each MFG started using the DEF fluid.

thanks,
Jeff

My bad......Not sure what DEF fluid is. Sorry, thought you were asking about what all years had DPF's on them, and just forgot to use spellcheck.

2011 GM and Ford both phased in DEF. Dodge/Cummins has on their Chassis and Cab trucks for 2011 (2010? maybe even) as well, but their regular trucks 2500 and 3500 will not use DEF for several more years.

Not quite.

Dodge doesn't yet use it on their pickups, but its now on the 2011 C&C.
Ford uses it on 2011+ trucks.
GM uses it on 2011+ trucks.

yeah, i am just interested what year trucks do not need the Diesel Exhaust Fluid added every 5k miles. My dad is old school, he bought a brand new duramax and is fed up with paying for 5 gallons of fluid every couple months. We are in western new york, he had it freeze up on him and check engine light is on because of the DEF was frozen, he is just fed up with it. I told him to buy a cummins.... you just cant convert the chevy guys.....

Tell him to go to the dealership, there was a TSB that requires a reflash to fix the issue of DEF freezing and throwing a CEL.

Also, he should be glad he has DEF. Injecting DEF means less EGR. Would you rather pay 15 bucks for some to inject into the exhaust every few months, or pay zero dollars and have the EGR valve recirculate a ton of soot back into the intake? Sure, the Duramax still has EGR but it's not nearly as much as the Cummins, because the EGR and the DEF are both doing the same thing.

'11 for the Ford and Chevy, also the '11 dodge HD C&C. Dodge is slated to go away from the troublesome DPF and start using DEF in all the 6.7's for the 2012 model year. According to Chrysler's Service Masters DEF should be refilled every 10k miles and will not trigger CEL if frozen. Truck will run normally until heater can unfreeze fluid.

Highly doubtful you will be seeing DEF on the 2500/3500 in the 2012 model year. Nothing is in the plans right now. Cummins is working on something else to meet the next set of guidelines and it doesn't involve DEF.

As for others using DEF, anything manufactured after December 31st 2009 is using DEF other than the 2500/3500 Dodge.

Just to clarify, it's only the engines manufactured after 12/31/09 that are DEF from Ford and GM. There are quite a few 2010 Silverado's and Sierras with a build date into 2010 with no DEF because they were built using older LMM engines produced in 2009.

I'll have to dispute that. The 2010 Emissions standards were set for Jan 1st 2010. NOTHING was allowed to be produced after that date that wasn't compliant.

Quote:
Why the need for a new round of updates to the Duramax just three years after the current engines arrived? Come Jan. 1, 2010, all new diesel-powered vehicles will have to meet tougher federal diesel emission standards that will reduce allowable nitrogen oxide levels by 90 percent from today, 96 percent from 1994 levels.
