Looking to ditch the VGT, for something that Spools as fast

I was looking into getting a new turbo for the truck but the one thing i can say about this VGT is it does spool nice. So I'm looking for a replacement that can spool as close to this one as possible on a stock truck. I was thinking the smaller i go the faster i can get it to spool something like a SILVER PHAT-SHAFT 62/80 . i don't want to do twins. The main thing I'm shooting for is MPG's . power isn't anything I'm pushing for right now maybe later down the road I'll push for 500 hp but for now the 350hp its putting out is fine. Any of the different turbos you guys have played with and have some input for me I would appreciate it.

62 is too small. At the smallest a 66. But if u don't want more hp, then whats wrong with the stocker?

not even worth the time it took you to type that paragraph then. smallest would be a 66mm if your gna put a programmer on it, 64 if you dont, i dont even see the point but its a smaller charger....

I just finished installing a SB66 and it is very streetable. It pulls a lot more air volume than the stock VGT. It is responsive like stock or better but a lot more fun to drive. I turned my tuning down and it is still cranking out a lot more torque than with the stock turbo. Still testing to optimize the tuning for my towing needs. Over all this has been the single best mod yet after the basic deletes. I thought that I had uncorked my engine when I opened up the exhaust system but changing the turbo and manifold really uncorked it. The truck is a lot louder from idle up...the stock VGT and stock manifold are very restrictive by comparison.

I'm looking to ditch it because the vanes just started sticking on the Jake. 113k miles, and use the Jake every day. Still sticking.

Are these chargers t3? Or t4?

They are both, but imo. Don't got t3. Anything over a 66: and a 66 if pushed will be too hot in a t3 configuration. Start off right with a t4, later if u want more u can upgrade the internals of ur charger and be good to go. It is a little more wrk now, but well worth it in the long run.

Well right now Im getting all the info in before i do any changes. Mean reason why I started this topic. But The reason i was thinking of going to a small turbo is because my many goal is to get the back pressure down, somthing that flows nice and spools fast. All that back presurre is what kills these trucks in the MPG's

i believe steed speed makes a T-3.5 foot (our 6.7L stock) manifold. They offer it with a wastegate port (for drive psi). Just do that, then upgrade with a batmowheel or a different billet wheel in the stock charger. There are a few different options if you want to stay stock. I am still back and forth on it as well. There is a few workstock 6.7L sampleing things like this with good results.

What happens when your vanes start sticking? What does it do? My EB has been acting wierd and making a hi pitched sound. I don't know if thats from my new Turbo back exhaust i put on it. I didn't really notice it when i put the new exhaust on it.

are you hearing that high pitched wine when you first start your truck or when its not up to operating temp yet???

If your truck hasn't warmed up, eb is on, free flowing cai and exhaust, it sounds like a little jet engine when its warming up.

That's completely normal.

If your eb is sticking, then there is a couple of diff symtoms..

1. no eb operation- meaning its stuck in the open position (off)
2. partial eb operation all the time
3. completely stuck closed.

2 & 3 will result in increased egt's, loss of power, low boost, etc..

Num 1 is where I'm at. It just won't engage. Light comes on, but no stoppy!!

I've taken mine off and cleaned it once. Fixing to do that again when I mod it with a bigger comp wheel and bigger turbine. At that point I'm going to make sure the eb is functioning. Not that I use it, but for testing purposes, for you guys that still want it. I've got a spare vgt that I'm going to use in place of mine. Hopefully between the two I can make one that works.

We will see.

Alright i did alot of reading,,, Dug threw like 60 pages on this forum looking for anything related to single turbos on a 6.7. From what I read the 66/74/14 will be where I want to be, seems like everyone thats run it says it spools fantastic on that set up. Now i did read in one post that the T3 would help it spool faster as long as I don't plan on running to much fuel, I might run 50hp nozzles so i can spool it up faster but thats it. Like Ive said big horse power isn't really my goal just trying to match the right turbo for this truck. If I'm still off let me know like Ive said before i don't know much about turbos but i am open to learning.
