Running board issue

I have an 08 Mega with the stock dodge running boards on it. Recently I noticed everytime I would go over a bump with both wheels at the same time there would be a rattling sound like a bolt in a can type sound. So I get under the truck with a rubber hammer and tap on everything I could find and for the life of me I couldnt find it. I go to get back into the truck and the front running board bolt that mounts to the frame on the bottom pulls out. Found my rattle. My issue is though that I cant get to it at all. The bolt just free spins but whatever it was mounted to is still attached to it so I cant get it out. Any ideas how to get to it and what to do after its out?

If it's like my '12, a collapsed rivnut holds the bolt in place. I'd take a pair of plyers and see if you can scrunch the rivnut down and try to work it out.

Drop the other bolts, let the board hang loose; may give you a bit more room and/or better vantage point. Good to know about that; I hate my boards and want to upgrade to power steps.

I'm gonna edit my post a bit. Can you snap some pics to clarify? Do you mean the bolt that attaches the mount to the truck itself, or the bolts that attach the step to the mount? I found this; it shows how the OEM steps install, so it may be of some benefit

The way it mounts looks pretty crappy to me.

I'm talking about the bolt that mounts the board to the truck. The bolt goes through the rocker panel it looks like and into a threaded mount on the inside of the rocker panel. I want to know how to get to the mount to fix it but I can't figure out how to get to it.

Thought I would go ahead and close this thread out. I went to the dealer and talked to one of their techs. 5 minutes later I'm good to go. He said that the bolt threads into a square threaded block that expands when it is screwed into. The bolt had been backed out too far and the block was spinning in its hole. He stuck a screwdriver up into the hole and hit it with a power drill and cinched it on downs and I'm good to go at no cost to me. Needless to say I'm pretty happy now.
