It is a serial number plain and simple. Several of the letters and or numbers can mean different things for different vehicles. Such as engine code, body style, etc. But you can also get all of that information off of the build sheet that is located in the glove compartment door.

reason i asked is, I took my truck to dealership get some new tires put on. While there they talked me into doing a transmission service ($189.95). I left my truck there and before long, got a call saying that i had a different transmission than the 68re, think he said i had a 68rcs and the tranny needed different fluid than most, so if i still wanted it done it would cost me over $500 bucks..... does that sound right or is it a buncha bull
