Angry Smarty Jr Extreme Frustration

After picking up my 07' dually a week ago, I have had nothing but horrible experiences with the "re-gen/CEL/smoke-like-hell" and surge down the highway mode. The CEL code says "low pressure sensor 1", which occured after very little driving. Since the DPF delete had been done on this truck and straight-piped, I suppose this fault code has something to do with back-pressure or whatever. In an attempt to "fix" the situation, the dealership had taken this truck to a diesel shop and they had installed this Smarty Jr "thing" which I would dearly love to put a 30.06 round thru. Not one shop in my hometown knows anything about the Smarty, they mainly sell the H&S programmer which, as they tell me, can program the ME software to prevent what is happening to this truck on almost a daily basis now. Last week I parked the Dodge in the barn, and am using my Ford 250 gas-engine. As far as the Smarty, there is no one to talk to concerning problems, I have not been able to download even the driver update for this thing, and I cannot find on the Mads site reference to the ME download for this unit. In short, I am not much of a computer guy, and I need the old-school method of being able to actually speak to someone to cure mechanical issues rather it be John Deere or Dodge or whoever. I would suppose at this point I need to set the Smarty back to Stock, unlock it, and purchase the H&S thru the diesel shop here in order to get my truck on the road. This has been one of the most frustrating experiences I have gone thru in a very long time. Does anyone believe I could sell this brand new Smarty POS for $250.00? I'm at the end of my rope.

You most definitely can sell it for $250.00. It really isn't that difficult to update a smarty. There are very detailed instructions online. Unfortunately it is somewhat difficult to get a hold of Bob or Marco from MADS, you can try, but I've never got the phone answered on first attempt. Otherwise find someone you trust that knows smarty, plug yours in, allow them to remote into your PC and update it for you.

Is the dealer whom you purchased from nearby? They should have known the problem still existed when you purchased, and perhaps can make things right, or put you in touch with the diesel shop who did the work?

Is the smarty loaded on the truck right now? If so, and you have done the dpf delete make sure the ME software is downloaded to the smarty box. If the ME software is not downloaded to your smarty, then go to MADSELECTRONICS.COM and click the FAQ section. There will be two video's that show you how to download the correct software.

Now, if ME software is loaded on your smarty, it sounds like you need to unplug your throttle valve. It's an electrical plug on the back side of your intake horn.

Try those and report back. Don't give up, it will be well worth it. I had a little trouble with my computer trying to download the softwar too. Let us know.

Thanx for the support guys, I truly appreciate it,,,the ME software is not on the Smarty, and I have been trying for several hours now to update, to no luck. I think at least with the H&S unit, there will be a knowledgeable technician at the diesel repair shop here in rural Texas to directly talk to for future problems be they mechanical or computer related.

Tell us where you are at, Boss. Plenty of us out here able to get you updated and trouble shooted. I'm sure if there is a Smarty owner local, they would be happy to get you set up with an update/download.

The Smarty is a good unit. Sounds to me like the shop doesn't know what they are doing.

And you will get a minimum of $400 for it no problem. $250 is giving it away....literally. Hell, I'd buy it from yo just to resell.

Just a thought.
Unload the program from your truck...ie return it to stock with the jr.
Find a computer person/young kid. give them the web site and have them
update/load the ME program into the smarty....
I offten have to ask my 16 year old how to do something on my pc.

This is exactly what I did with my smarty Jr. A young guy at work took it home and brought it back the next day with ME downloaded. It has worked perfectly ever since. Don't give up on the tuner yet, it will do the job if you follow the directions. If you really feel like you need a H&S, sell your Jr here and pick up a used H&S for little more than you get for the Jr. Also, take a deep breath and relax, the issues you are having are not a big deal at all!!! I went through the same buyers regret when my DPF plugged the first week I owned mine. The deletes are the best thing that could have been done to your truck!

Smarty Jr67ME

Hey guys, first time posting here but it is an awesome info site. I just did a total CAT and DPF and EGR delete on my 2010 Ram 3500 Dually Megacab Laramie. Wow, what a huge difference. I tuned it to the towing tune on the Smarty, removed everything from the turbo to the muffler so now only a straight pipe in there. Used a Sinister Diesel EGR delete kit as they offer the coolant hose. Installed an H&S FlowMaxx intake elbow and boost tube. All this done myself and cost under 1400 bucks Canadian. Big difference in the turbo spool up and also in the mpg. I am now getting around 30mpg on highway at 110km/h and revs at 1700rpm. It does not emit one iota of black smoke either, even if I try to tromp on it. I will be pulling our 34' rv around in the next couple weeks so curious as to what the mileage will be then. I would say take your Smarty to one of the dealers and have them do the update for you, mine here does it for free no worries.
