Emissions Testing

Here is a list of states that test emissions, looks like 33 out of 50. Luckily my state does not test emissions yet. I will keep my truck stock in case they start with testing and I would not be able to get a tag or registration. I have read the fines are huge for violating the Federal emissions laws by tampering with emission equipment and parts. It just is not worth it, I guess we will have to accept the changes on the way.

the above list doesn't specify if the testing is for gas or diesels. BUT, Texas is on the list and NOWHERE in Texas are diesels emissions tested. so the guys on here can basically remove Texas from the list.

Illinois is one of the states listed, but they only test in two areas and this is what the test states. All diesel powered vehicles are exempt.

I know here in Utah they only test Diesels is 2 counties, in fact they only test gas in 3 or 4...I am thinking it will be pretty easy to move to a realitives address in a rural county if they ever decide to start it up in mine!

Tennessee states that all gas or diesel vehicles be inspected. Down below that is states that this only applies to vehicles with a GVWR of 10,500 lbs or less. Nothing to worry about as far as emissions testing goes here in the Volunteer state.

A cousin in the D.C. area of Virginia is looking at an '07 with the 6.7. He'd like to do all the deletes. Would this cause problems with getting inspections? I called the number for Virginia in the link Beech posted and the guy asked for the year and said it would not be tested as the truck was over 8500 lbs. GVWR. On Virginia's DMV website it says:

Diesel powered vehicles

NOTE: Diesel powered vehicles are not exempt from the emissions testing program requirements when they have:

1. A model year newer than 1996, and
2. A Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) less than 8,501 lbs., (if GVWR is not available, empty and gross weights will be used) and
3. A registration that expires in July 2007 or later.

This seems to conflict with the information the guy on the phone gave me. Can someone help clear this up?

Read just the highlighted part. I would read this as if the vehicle is over 8501 lbs then it is exempt and if it is under then testing is required. That is how I would read it.

There is no contradiction. To NOT be exempt, your vehicle has to match all 3 criteria. Yours doesn't fit the second one, so you ARE exempt.

(Oops, Andy beat me to it.)

Colorado

Here is the info for Colorado taken from:

Department of Revenue - Division of Motor Vehicles:Diesel Vehicles

seems like I was looking forever to get the "right answer for this state!

Diesel Emissions Program Area:

The full counties of Boulder, Jefferson, Broomfield, Denver, and Douglas, and the partial counties of Adams and Arapahoe, Larimer, Weld, and El Paso.

Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR)

Heavy-duty diesel vehicles - GVWR of 14,001 lbs. or more.
Light-duty diesel vehicles - GVWR of 14,000 or less.

Cost

The diesel emission testing facilities can charge up to one-hour of the posted labor rates. There is no set fee.

Temporarily Exempt Vehicles

Heavy-duty and light-duty diesel vehicles are exempt from emissions for the first four model years. After the exemption period, vehicles are required to be tested as instructed in Vehicle Emissions Testing Cycles below.

Vehicle Emissions Testing Cycles

Light-duty diesels that are 2003 and older are required to have an emissions test every year .

Light-duty diesels that are 2004 and newer are required to have an emissions test every 2 years.

Heavy-duty diesels that are less than 10 model years old are to have an emissions test every 2 years.

Heavy-duty diesels that are more than 10 model years old are to have an emissions test every year.
